The assignment of personnel to a Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) is significantly influenced by the number of personnel available in a company. Essentially, RICs are developed to ensure there are sufficient trained individuals ready to intervene in the event of a Mayday situation, where firefighters need immediate assistance.

When a fire scene is being managed, departments must consider the resources at their disposal. The number of personnel on duty plays a crucial role in determining how many firefighters can be allocated to the RIC while still maintaining effective fireground operations. Ideally, the RIC should have enough members to adequately respond to emergencies that may arise, such as a firefighter becoming trapped or disoriented.

In contrast, while the type of building, rank of firefighters, and time of day may affect operational strategies or logistical considerations, they do not directly dictate the establishment or makeup of the RIC in the same manner as the number of available personnel.
